Privacy Rights Expert to Visit Australia

GENEVA - The Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy, Ana Brian Nougrères, will conduct an official visit to Australia from 8 to 19 August 2024.

The expert will examine privacy issues in relation to personal data protection, including health data, sharing of data across borders, cybersecurity, surveillance, oversight mechanisms and remedies, artificial intelligence and privacy concerns of specific groups regarding gender, indigenous people and children in the digital age.

The visit takes place at the invitation of the Government. The Special Rapporteur will meet with Federal and State level officials, civil society, academia, business and UN agencies in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

She will hold a press conference at the conclusion of her visit, on Monday 19 August at 15:00 (local time) at the United Nations Association of Australia, East Melbourne, Victoria, to share her preliminary observations. Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists.

The Special Rapporteur will present her report to the Human Rights Council in March 2025.
