Acting Townsville Mayor Les Walker has welcomed the appointment of architecture firm Conrad Gargett to masterplan and design the $450 million Hive project.
Cr Walker said the firm has had an office in Townsville for several years, and the company has commenced an updated design for the Hive.
"It's exciting to see this major project is progressing further with the help of an architecture firm with a well-established local presence," Cr Walker said.
The Hive could include a high-end hotel, 1,000 seat concert hall, tertiary education centre, tropical science research facilities, residential apartments, commercial areas, arts and cultural spaces and a café and dining precinct.
The release of the new design comes after Council approved a negotiated decision last month.
The changes to the original proposal include the introduction of a precinct plan and allowing a maximum height up to 20 storeys. The condition that requires more than 800 parking spaces remains.
Cr Walker said the revised Hive proposal was another major project providing a huge boost to the city's economy.
"It's fantastic the private sector is showing confidence in our city to invest in delivering such a major project," Cr Walker said.
"The city's new water pipeline and the North Queensland stadium are being built and the Hive is another shot in the arm for the local economy.
"The Hive will be delivered in four precincts including the Queens Hotel, Entertainment, Cultural and Accommodation.
"When completed, the Hive will completely transform that area of the city."
Cr Walker said the Townsville 2020 Masterplan provides a clear vision for our city and gives confidence to the business community.
"More businesses are looking at Townsville as a great place to invest, which will no doubt help create more job opportunities for locals," Cr Walker said.
