Proposal for Controlled Facility Exemption Declaration

The acting CEO of ARPANSA, Dr Ivan Williams, has given notice of proposal to make a declaration of exemption in relation to a controlled facility.

The public notice reads as follows:

Notice of proposal to make a declaration of exemption in relation to a controlled facility

'I, Ivan Williams, Acting CEO of ARPANSA, acting under the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998 give notice that I propose to make a declaration of exemption under subsection 43(2) of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Regulations 2018.

The proposed declaration relates to an industrial X-ray machine called a linear accelerator that uses electricity to generate the X-ray beams to image materials and equipment.

The proposed declaration is:

  • The preparation of a site for a controlled facility and the construction of a controlled facility for a 4 MeV Linear Accelerator, replacing the existing linear accelerator used for the same purpose in Port Wakefield, South Australia, by the Department of Defence and Australian Defence Force (Defence) does not, or will not, pose an unacceptable potential hazard to the health and safety of people or to the environment.
