- Qld Fishing app 2.0 gets new features with latest update
- Fishers able to submit more comprehensive catch data
- App has had 180,000 downloads since its launch in 2020
The popular Qld Fishing 2.0 app is going to the next level, with fishers and citizen scientists now able to record and submit catch data and shark depredation data in real time.
The latest updates to Queensland's number one recreational fishing app will add historical catch figures for fishers so they can see what they've caught in the past, and social media sharing of catch photos.
The latest upgrades to the app are:
- 'My fishing' personalised feature replaces 'My fish photo'
- Ability to input recreational catch and depredation data
- Provision of environmental data for fishing trips
- Stats so fishers can see what they've caught historically
- Social media sharing of photos and basic information from fishing trips
- Ability to set preferences for favourite species, boat ramps and stocked impoundments
- Improved fish identification for 10 species (re-trained artificial intelligence (AI) from photos submitted by fishers)
- Choose your own adventure — fill out the minimum data required, or go one step further to get better fishing stats, photos, comments etc. in fishing history
- Security and privacy protected by user login.
User feedback has influenced upgrades to the 'My fishing' personalised feature, a secure and private space to record fishing trips, including catch, release and depredation, as well as swell, moon phase and air temperature.
Users can submit records of their fishing trips to contribute to research, and can also generate their own 'Captain's log' to share stats of their fishing prowess with friends and family on social media, or even run a friendly "Captain's challenge".
Fisheries Queensland encourages fishers to report shark depredation, which is a key area of research that needs more data from recreational fishers to help understand how often these interactions are occurring, better informing assessment and management processes.
Fishers will retain any data they input into the app, helping to provide assurances about their input into future stock assessments.
