Queanbeyan Station Accessibility Upgrade Begins

NSW Gov

The Minns Labor Government is investing $2.2 million to start construction of a long-awaited accessibility upgrade at Queanbeyan railway station, with construction expected to start next week.

Promised but never delivered by the former Liberal and Nationals Government, the upgrade will make it easier for people with disabilities, parents and carers or other people with mobility challenges to access transport options at the station.

As part of the upgrade a new kiss and ride zone, accessible car space and taxi zone will all be built in the existing car park.

Enhancements will also be made to existing paths and kerb ramps at the station entrance.

Modifications will also be made to the waiting room and improvements to the toilets, wayfinding and lighting.

The upgrade is being delivered as part of the Minns Labor Government's new $800 million Safe Accessible Transport (SAT) program.

Under the program, Transport for NSW will make improvements to amenity, access and safety for the community and achieve Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) compliance.

Joss Group has been awarded the construction contract, with work due to start on 5 December and be complete around the middle of 2025, weather permitting.

Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said:

"Queanbeyan Station is an important transport hub for the community and these upgrades will make travelling with a pram or luggage easier, as well as more accessible for passengers with a disability.

"Public Transport should be safe and accessible for everyone. That's why the NSW Government is investing $800 million in the new Safe Accessible Transport Program, to make sure our public transport is as safe and inclusive as possible."

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:

"Accessibility upgrades like the one we're undertaking at Queanbeyan Railway station won't just improve access to public transport; they will mean passengers with disabilities and mobility challenges will have better access to healthcare, education and job opportunities that all enrich our regional communities.

"I'd like to thank the local Member for Monaro Steve Whan for his ongoing advocacy for improved roads and transport. While the Nationals dilly-dallied on this station upgrade, Steve has delivered it."

Member for Monaro Steve Whan said:

"Community members have been waiting a long time for this upgrade and I am pleased to be part of a Labor government that is improving accessibility for all at Queanbeyan station.

"By making stations like Queanbeyan more accessible we will be making transport a more viable option for more people and ensuring greater inclusion in our community."

"The train service to Sydney is very important for local residents, and the accessibility is one of its most vital features."
