During a visit to India, President and Principal Professor Colin Bailey CBE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Queen Mary and the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS). This is the first agreement between the two institutions and Queen Mary's ninth partnership in India.
Queen Mary was welcomed on the HITS campus near Chennai by Chancellor Dr Anand Jacob Verghese and other senior leaders including Vice Chancellor Dr S. N. Sridhara and Dr N Manoharan, Director International Affairs.
During the visit, Professor Colin Bailey, stated: "I am delighted to be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science today. This represents the start of a new journey for Queen Mary and HITS, building promising partnerships and learning from each other's expertise. With its high-quality teaching and state-of-the art facilities, HITS is a forward-looking institution that combines new ways of multidisciplinary learning with an international outlook."
HITS also provided insight into developments around the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), introduced by the Indian government in 2020. The NEP aims to create multidisciplinary offerings and internationalise the Indian higher education system. This includes reforming existing curriculums, enabling flexibility of study and combining streams of knowledge.
HITS offers a range of Engineering degrees including Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
The university operates 14 Centres of Excellence with state-of-the art laboratory facilities. The Centre for Automation and Robotics (ANRO) developed a high-tech service robot named SEVILI to assist Medical Frontline during COVID 19 Pandemic. HITS's Centre for Research and Consultancy (CRC) has executed many major R&D projects and consultancy services in Government agencies, public and private sector industries, and international institutions.
