Queensland Households Gain Expanded Solar, Savings

A new funding agreement between the Australian Government and the Queensland Government will benefit up to 5,500 Queensland households in Caloundra and Townville with cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy.

The Australian Government's Community Solar Banks program is providing an additional $21.2 million in funding, under a Federation Funding Agreement, to the Queensland Government. This funding aims to increase the solar capacity of the Local Renewable Energy Zones (LREZ) project by 10.6 MW to a total of 16.2 MW.

The Queensland Government have committed $80 million to LREZ projects in Townsville and Caloundra. This will:

  • boost renewable energy production
  • improve grid stability
  • ensure reliable energy supply for local communities.

The projects will provide:

  • the benefits of 'shared solar' energy for households including those living in apartments, renters and with low-incomes
  • the ability for households to save up to $800 per annum on electricity bills.
