QUT Writers Rewarded In Queensland Literary Awards

Four QUT creative writing teaching staff have been recognised with prizes in the 2024 Queensland Literary Awards.

Dr Sarah Kanake, Dr Jarad Bruinstroop and Myles McGuire are all graduates of QUT's creative writing program and teach in the area, and Emily Lighezzolo has also been teaching creative writing at QUT since 2020.

State Librarian and CEO Vicki McDonald congratulated all winners and finalists at last night's event, particularly those who are just beginning their journey.

"This year's Queensland Literary Award winners remind us how the very best writing actively examines the complexities of the human condition," Ms McDonald said.

"Through reflection, imagination and documentation, these authors show us this rare skill, across genres, styles and subjects."

Two of the QUT recipients, Dr Kanake and Dr Bruinstroop, were awarded Queensland Writers Fellowships of $20,000 each, plus professional development support to the value of $4500.

Dr Bruinstroop won for his novel project For the Duration. Dr Kanake won for her novel project Lazarus; or, The Whale.

Mr McGuire received a Queensland Premier's Young Publishers and Writers Awards of $12,000 plus career development support to the value of $3000.

Ms Lighezzolo received the Glendower Award for an Emerging Queensland Writer, which is a prize of $15,000 plus publication with University of Queensland Press, for her novel manuscript Life Drawing.

QUT's Head of the School of Creative Arts Professor Damian Candusso congratulated the writers for the significant recognition.

"QUT writers have an admirable track record in the Queensland Literary Awards in the past few years and it is wonderful to see this continue with these four well-deserved awards," Professor Candusso said.
