Today (9 Sept) is R U OK Day.
The 2021 R U OK day theme is 'Are you really OK?' – making sure this is not a question we only ask one day of the year, but something we are checking in with regularly, especially during lockdown.
With our workforce currently spread out across our various (closed) buildings and many also working remotely from home our various teams have been been using online meetings to not only get work done, but stay connected with each other through virtual lunch breaks, trivia competitions and the like.
Council also provides staff mental health support services through our Employee Assistance Program, to complement the peer support of these team meetings and activities.
Our CEO Jane Stroud and Mayor Mark Honey were among those who donned their 'R U OK yellow' to promote the importance of looking out for each other while apart.
"The world (especially NSW) is a tough place right now, many of us are at home, with work colliding into our home lives literally, and for some of us school too. I, for one, am not finding that very easy," Ms Stroud said.
"I encourage you all tomorrow to take a brief moment out of your busy day, to check in on friends and family too."
Clr Honey gave special mention to those council staff still working as normal, providing the essential services such as waste collection, cleaning public toilets and managing our parks and reserves.
"Today is an opportunity to consider those essential workers, not just at councils, who have been turning up to their jobs as normal in anything but normal conditions to provide the services we rely on."
"I encourage everyone, if you get the chance, to stop and thank them today or anyday for that matter, and also ask them if they are okay too."
