For many children, the dream of floating high above the ground is pure magic.
At this year's Very Special Kids Lord Somers Camp, the Air Force Balloon brought that dream to life, lifting spirits and creating unforgettable memories for children with life-limiting conditions.
The ADF is committed to serving not just in Defence, but in uplifting communities. The Air Force Balloon team's participation in the camp is part of a broader mission - to inspire, support and bring joy to those who need it most.
Ruby, Miriam and Ivy were thrilled by the opportunity.
"We can't believe it, this is so exciting, we can't believe we get to go up in the balloon," they said.
Against the backdrop of the stunning Somers coastline, excited children and their families watched in awe as the Air Force Balloon inflated, towering above them like a symbol of adventure and possibility.
'We can't believe it, this is so exciting, we can't believe we get to go up in the balloon.'
As they took turns stepping into the basket, the sense of wonder in their eyes was a reminder that the sky is never the limit.
"This is more than just a balloon flight," balloon pilot Squadron Leader Samuel Wright said.
"It's about bringing joy, fostering connection and showing these kids, they can dream big."
Very Special Kids provides free holistic palliative care for Victorian children and young people with life-limiting conditions, including tailored support for their families - through life, death and bereavement.
The Very Special Kids Camp, hosted by Lord Somers Camp and Power House, is a special time where children and families can take a break from daily challenges and the ADF is honoured to be part of that experience.
Whether through disaster relief, humanitarian aid, or events like this, the ADF remains committed to serving Australians.
As the sun rose over the bay, the Air Force Balloon stood as a reminder of resilience, hope and the power of community.
For these children, on this special day, they were not defined by their life-limiting illness - they were adventurers reaching for the sky.
