RACGP Supports Politicians' Demand for Parliament Onsite GP

Australia's peak GP body has expressed disappointment that funding has not been provided for an onsite GP at Parliament despite recommendations in the Jenkins report and agitation from Senators and members of parliament.

The Department of Parliamentary Services secretary told Senate Estimates funding for an onsite GP wasn't sought in the most recent Federal Budget.

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) Vice President Associate Professor Michael Clements backed calls for an onsite GP to improve the health and wellbeing of people working there.

"Everyone deserves the quality care your get from a GP who knows you and your history, including politicians and staffers working at Parliament House in Canberra," he said.

"Politicians and their staff work long hours and may not be able to go offsite for medical care, meaning they'll miss out unless there is a GP onsite.

"The RACGP backs the calls from Senators and members of parliament for an onsite GP, including Senator David Pocock, Senator Jane Hume, Dr Mike Freelander and Dr Sophie Scamps, and we would be very happy to facilitate it.

"Research shows the value of the relationship people have with their GP. When people can see a doctor who knows them and their history, it leads to better health and wellbeing.

"GPs are the most visited health professional in our country – more than 22 million Australians received 179 million services from GPs in 2022.

"Health and wellbeing should be a priority in any workplace including Parliament House. An onsite GP at parliament would help ensure those making critical decisions for our country can access the care they need to live healthier lives."
