HealthShare's decision to close four retail outlets, including the cafe at Manning Base Hospital, has sparked outrage among staff and community members, prompting a rally at the hospital on Wednesday.
Over 1,000 staff members across various medical fields rely on the retail outlets, especially the cafe which is an important facility for staff to relax and recharge. A petition calling for the decision to be reversed has garnered 4,000 signatures.
The rally will be held on High Street, outside the hospital from 1pm on Wednesday 28 August.
"This is a regrettable decision and one that should be reversed," said Gerard Hayes, HSU NSW Secretary. "These outlets, especially the cafe, provide a much needed refuge from the stress and exhaustion of working in a hospital. The hospital run cafe also offers affordable refreshments for workers and community members alike
"The arguments we have heard from management just don't stack up. This is unnecessary meddling and it needs to end. Reverse the decision and give exhausted hospital workers somewhere to relax."
