The Cook Government's Safety and Security Rebate scheme has hit an important milestone, with 30,000 Western Australian seniors now having claimed up to $400 to upgrade their home security and safety.
The Safety and Security Rebate is available exclusively to WA Seniors Card members, allowing claims of up to $400 for the purchase or installation of eligible home security, electrical or fire safety items.
Since its launch in August 2021, the rebate scheme has paid more than $11 million in claims to 30,000 members for eligible items, which have been purchased, installed or repaired in seniors' households.
Many businesses offer WA Seniors Card members a discount on their safety or security products or services. These are listed on the WA Seniors Card website or in the 2024-2025 Discount Directory book which was recently launched on July 30, 2024.
The rebate can be claimed for the cost of purchasing safety or security products or for professional installation by a licensed tradesperson for the following:
- home alarms or CCTV systems;
- security door screens;
- deadlocks;
- security window screens or window shutters;
- security sensor lights;
- wi-fi or wired video doorbells;
- mains-powered smoke alarms;
- residual current devices;
- fire extinguishers;
- fire blankets; and
- licensed installation and repair services on eligible items listed above.
It is important to remember that when installing security items, such as security doors, windows, deadlocks, home alarms and CCTV systems, it is mandatory for the supplier to hold a Security Agent Licence and the tradesperson to hold a valid Security Installer's Licence.
This is for your protection to ensure the tradesperson has been registered with WA Police. It is important because they will have access to your house and security systems during installation.
For the safety of both the home occupant and tradesperson, electrical items such as mains-powered smoke alarms or residual current devices must only be installed by a licensed electrician.
