Liberal Tasmania
  • Jane Hume Shadow Minister for Finance, the Public Service and Shadow Special Minister of State.
  • Did Rebecca White make a brazen attempt at a cover-up when on 29 November last year she said in her valedictory speech that Brian Mitchell has decided not to contest Lyons, Shadow Special Minister of State, Senator Jane Hume said today.

"I want to acknowledge the significant generosity of spirit of Brian Mitchell who has decided to support me to become the federal candidate for Lyons instead of standing again. His decision is truly selfless…" Ms White said. [bold added]

"Rebecca White stood up in Tasmania's Parliament and insisted to the world that Brian Mitchell had decided not to stand again," Senator Hume said.

"Yet, we now know that Mr Mitchell did indeed stand in what can only be described as a sham pre-selection, in order to qualify for a $115,000 taxpayer-funded payout.

"So did Ms White lie to the Tasmanian Parliament? And if so, was this an attempted cover-up of what we now know to be a sham pre-selection?

"Ms White must immediately front-up and explain to Tasmanians what she knows about this pre-selection scam," Senator Hume concluded.
