Almost a third of all Australians aged 15 and over are volunteers, with Tasmania boasting the second highest volunteering rate in the country.
It's estimated that almost six million Australians volunteer through an organisation every year.
This year, National Volunteer Week will run from May 15 to 21, with a theme of 'The Change Makers'.
The week-long event recognises the vital support that volunteers provide to their communities, while encouraging more to take up volunteering.
The City of Launceston will celebrate National Volunteer Week with a special event on May 15 to thank the City's not-for-profit volunteers.
Launceston Mayor Danny Gibson said it was important to thank those people in our community who gave up their time freely and willingly to help those most in need.
"Our volunteer celebrations are about driving change and ensuring volunteering is inclusive of all members of our community," Mayor Gibson said.
"We know that volunteering provides people with a sense of purpose and community. It helps you make new friends and improves your social skills and self-esteem.
"And of course, it teaches you valuable new skills and may even lead to new and exciting job prospects.
"Quite frankly, our Launceston is what it is because of the depth and diversity of our volunteers."
This year's City of Launceston Volunteering celebration will include a morning tea and movie at the Tramsheds Function Centre on May 15 from 10.30am.
Mayor Gibson said all Launceston-based not-for-profit organisations are invited to send up to 10 volunteer representatives to the event.
Seats are limited and registrations, which close on Wednesday, are essential.
