Record Crowds Expected at Queensland Police Open Day

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) are opening their doors for the Brisbane Open Day tomorrow, July 20, to give the community and potential recruits a behind the scenes glimpse of what a career with the QPS looks like.

The Brisbane Open Day, hosted at the Bob Atkinson Operational Capability Centre (BAOCC) in Wacol, will open its doors from 9am until 2pm and is expected to attract a record crowd with free ticket allocations nearly exhausted.

The Brisbane Open day will provide the community with a chance to interact with various specialist units including Dog Squad, PolAir, Special Emergency Response team, Forensic Services Group and Water Police.

The specialist units will be offering live demonstrations and detailed information about a day in the life for potential recruits and the community to learn about how Queensland Police keep Queenslanders safe.

Mounted Unit Officer, Acting Sergeant Lisa Shilton, said "Open Day is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate what a policing career can offer.

"Being a Mounted Unit Officer is an extremely rewarding job. It allows me to combine my passion for all things horses with operational police work and serving the community."

"I feel extremely lucky to do what I do, and the Open Day provides us with an opportunity to show the community what a career with the Mounted Unit can really look like".

This Open Day marks an exciting time to join the QPS, with the current recruiting pipeline the largest in history.

Since the launch of the "Challenging, Rewarding, Policing" campaign in 2023 we have 2,276 recruits in the pipeline, more than 744 recruits have graduated from the QPS academies, with 743 currently undergoing training, and 1450 expected to be recruited by 2025.

Commissioner Steve Gollschewski, emphasised the significance of the upcoming Open Days in Brisbane and Townsville, highlighting their potential to inspire future recruits.

"Our QPS Open Days provide community members with the opportunity to see firsthand the diverse and rewarding career pathways available within the QPS from Forensics and PolAir to Dog Squad and our Mounted Unit," Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said.

"We are eager to demonstrate the variety of careers and cutting-edge training facilities our recruits have available to them.

"We have seen a significant increase in recruit applications as a result of our ongoing recruitment campaign and range of incentives on offer to new recruits. We look forward to welcoming even more dedicated individuals to the QPS family.

"If you've ever considered a career in policing, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more about a challenging, rewarding career in the QPS."

To further explore the opportunities a policing career offers, the QPS will also be hosting an annual Open Day in Townsville, at the Townville Police Academy on Saturday, August 3.
