Record Low Unemployment Rate For Tasmania

Michael Ferguson, Treasurer

Jobs are still looking for people under the Tasmanian Liberal Government.

The latest labour market data released today by the ABS backs that up showing that Tasmania has recorded low unemployment of 3.8 per cent for June 2024.

The latest good news in unemployment continues a period of nearly three years of unemployment below 4.2 per cent and comes despite national economic headwinds as a result of sustained high interest rates and inflation.

The latest figures also show a total of 284,400 Tasmanians employed, including a near-record 139,400 women.

Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, welcomed the latest data.

"These figures show that Tasmania's economy remains resilient under the strong economic management of the Tasmanian Liberal Government. Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is working and Tasmania is currently experiencing the lowest unemployment rate in history," the Treasurer said.

"This unemployment rate is more than half of what it was at the peak of the former Labor-Green Government's 2013 recession when it reached nearly 8 per cent. There are now more than 49,000 more Tasmanians employed today than when we came to Government.

"Pleasingly the participation of 61.2 per cent is also the highest it has been this year.

"With interest rates regularly rising over the last two years there's no doubt we're experiencing tougher times economically.

"However, despite Federal Labor's failure to support Tasmania with GST, health funding and now infrastructure, our policies are working and we are flat out encouraging positive confidence against the continued negativity of the unstable State Labor under Dean Winter who shift and change policies depending on the mood.

"Our economic plan has been working for a long time and our Government will continue to focus on what matters – jobs, investment and economic growth."
