The Australian Government is investing $30 million in a new Reefwise Farming Program.
This program will:
- encourage sustainable farming practices
- help farmers boost their productivity and profits
- improve the water quality that flows into the Reef.
Run-off from farms, which includes nutrients and pesticides, pollutes the water. This pollution damages the Great Barrier Reef's diverse marine life and weakens its ability to handle climate change.
The Reefwise Farming Program is part of a larger $192 million Clearer Water for a Healthy Reef funding package. This package aims to improve the water quality flowing into the Reef.
Reefwise Farming activities include:
- saving water and labour while maintaining or increasing crop yields
- improved nutrient and irrigation efficiency
- reducing flood run-off, reusing water, and enhancing soil health
- training, workshops, and support for farmers.
This funding is part of the Australian Government's record $1.2 billion investment to protect and restore the Great Barrier Reef.
Applications for funding are not being sought at this stage. The panel of Regional Delivery Partners will be used to deliver projects consistent with Commonwealth Procurement Rules.
