Reflections on war

Young students from Sandringham Primary School gathered in Hampton RSL's Gallipoli Memorial Garden and listened intently to the stories of local diggers.

The children were among the first to take part in the RSL's Schools Visitation Program, financed by a Council Annual Community grant.

There will be ten primary schools visiting the garden during the program.

Beneath the prickly Gallipoli oak and the two Lone Pines the garden has ten rocks laid to reflect the geography of the Gallipoli Peninsula. They bear the names of the 92 diggers from Bayside who fell there.

"This is a peaceful place of reflection," Chairman of Friends of Gallipoli Inc John Basarin OAM said.

John said the school visits will allow young people to recognize and commemorate those from their own community who fought and died on the Turkish peninsula.

Community Grants

The RSL's Schools Visitation Program is financed by a Council Annual Community grant.

Council's Annual Community Grants program supports initiatives proposed by community groups which strengthen and enrich community life through the provision of an improved range of leisure, cultural, community development, environmental, health, education, sporting and welfare programs and activities.

Grants of up to $7,500 each are considered for initiatives by eligible community groups that meet the objectives of Council's Grants Policy and the Annual Community Grants Guidelines.

We invite local not-for-profit groups that contribute to making Bayside a better place to live to apply for a community grant. Applications close Wednesday 18 May 2022 5pm.
