Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal was proud to officially open the new Neville Tomlinson Regional BMX facility at Carmichael Park on Monday 22 April.

The construction of the new BMX facility was delivered alongside other park upgrades including the addition of new four bay cricket practice nets, a full-size multipurpose court and hit-up/rebound wall and provides regional standard amenities for Bellbird.

The upgraded BMX facility also provides the opportunity for community members to train competitively for BMX.

Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said he is pleased to see the opening of the new Neville Tomlinson Regional BMX Facility.

"Our new Regional BMX facility honours local hero, Neville Tomlinson, and his immense contribution to the Bellbird community," said Clr Suvaal.

"Neville was instrumental in establishing the original track that became a hub of activity for generations of residents. I look forward to seeing the community come together to enjoy these fantastic new facilities."

Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper, said projects like these show the NSW Government's commitment to delivering local sporting infrastructure.

"Sport infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping communities healthy, active and connected and these upgrades and new BMX facility will allow more people to take part in sport whether they are training competitively or just for fun."

Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr, said "it is important for Governments to invest in a wide range of sporting facilities to meet the needs and interests of the community. The upgrades and new BMX facility are a welcome addition to the area."

"Community sport builds connected, healthy and active communities – these upgrades will provide residents with a terrific new facility to participate in both training and recreation."

The new BMX track received funding from the NSW Government's Resources for Regions Round 8 ($250,000) and the Australian Government's Investing in Our Communities program ($500,000), alongside from Cessnock City Council. The sporting facilities were funded by the NSW Government's 2021/22 Regional Sport Facility Fund ($648,640).

Council would also like to thank Woolworths Cessnock for supporting the community opening.
