Regional Connections Up In Air

NSW Nationals

The NSW Nationals have called on the State and Federal Labor governments to ensure regional communities won't be cut off after REX Airlines and went into voluntary administration.

Leader of the NSW Nationals, Dugald Saunders said it's the second regional carrier facing the possibility of collapse after Bonza suspended their operations in April.

"The news is very concerning and will have a flow on effect for anyone who lives and works in the bush," Mr Saunders said.

"Being a regional MP, I'm one of the seven million Australians living outside the city, that relies on companies like REX to access to services we need."

"The Premier needs to pick up the phone to his federal counterparts and make sure there's a clear plan to mitigate the impact this will have on our communities."

Dave Layzell, the Member for Upper Hunter and Shadow Minister for Regional Transport said the move could impact connections between the most remote parts of NSW and the rest of the State.

"Around 2.5 million people fly with REX every year, whether that's for work trips, to see loved ones or to go on holidays," Mr Layzell said.

"It's also played a role in freight and the aerial transport of medical personnel and patients throughout rural NSW."

"Having more regional services available has not only been a game changer for passengers but also for the health of our residents and our local economies."

All REX 737-operated flights have been grounded; however, Saab 340 flights will continue for now.
