A new strain of bird flu, high pathogenicity avian influenza H5N1, is causing mass mortalities of birds and mammals across the world. It is spreading rapidly between continents through the movement of wild birds.
Australia is the only continent that remains free of the strain of global concern.
The Australian Government is hosting a webinar to provide more information about the global situation and how we are preparing for a potential outbreak.
The webinar will explore 'Exercise Volare' - a series of simulations focused on a hypothetical incursion of bird flu in wildlife. It aimed to strengthen our preparedness and inform management of the new bird flu strain across agriculture, environment and health portfolios.
The exercise involved Australian, state and territory governments, industry and non-government groups.
