The dam emergency safety plan for the tailings storage facility at the former Benambra mine site was tested in an online exercise in mid-October to check and improve the response process in the unlikely event of an incident.
The successful initiative was a collaboration led by Earth Resources Regulation with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Environment Protection Authority, Victoria Police, East Gippsland Shire, East Gippsland Water, East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Victoria State Emergency Service and Round Oak Minerals.
The exercise will now be reviewed to ensure the wellbeing of first responders, enhance mechanisms to identify potential safety issues and the improve the early warning system in the event of an incident.
The dam emergency safety plan identifies the risk of potential incidents and outlines which organisation will lead the response depending on the circumstances.
The Benambra site is inspected, monitored and maintained to ensure its effective operation and safety, including following the recent earthquake centred near Mansfield and felt across the state.
