Reliant Delivers In Pacific

Department of Defence

Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Reliant set sail from Brisbane in late December for her first deployment of the year, reaffirming Australia's commitment to strengthening ties and providing support to the Pacific region.

The first stop on Reliant's journey was to deliver two fire trucks to the Republic of Kiribati.

The fire trucks - donated by the South Australian Country Fire Service - will not only provide a safety net for emergencies but also serve as a valuable training tool for Kiribati's firefighters.

Kiribati Police Service Acting Commissioner Eeri Aritiera said the trucks were vital to protecting the resilience of the remote Kiritimati atoll.

"For many years, Australian firefighters have provided training and equipment to the Kiribati Police Service to keep I-Kiribati [and Kiribati] safe," Acting Commissioner Aritiera said.

"These trucks and tools are vital in covering the vast area of the atoll."

Working with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ADV Reliant also delivered humanitarian aid and disaster relief provisions, along with spares for Kiribati's Guardian-class patrol boats, further enhancing the nation's maritime capabilities.

Travelling with the crew was OPSTAR paramedic contractor Jarde Egar who conducted first-aid training focused on disaster scenarios.

"Boosting resilience means strengthening communities and enhancing their health to mitigate the negative impacts of challenges, both present and future," Mr Egar said.

"Working with partners to bolster their skills provides meaningful outcomes, which is personally satisfying."

Further strengthening regional ties during the visit, the Australian High Commissioner hosted a luncheon and Zumba fitness session on board, bringing together I-Kiribati and New Zealand officials alongside Australian crew members.

The activities fostered camaraderie and celebrated the regional partnership.

ADV Reliant will continue her patrol through the Pacific over the coming months. She will visit Pacific island countries, delivering stores and equipment, and supporting maritime surveillance to reinforce Pacific resilience, security and wellbeing.
