Remembering D-Day: 80 Years On

Guy Barnett, Minister for Veterans Affairs

June 6 marks a significant milestone in world history—the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

On this day in 1944, more than 150,000 Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in a massive effort to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany's grip.

Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Guy Barnett, said that as we reflect on this pivotal event, it's essential to appreciate its profound impact and the incredible bravery displayed by those who participated.

"D-Day was a monumental undertaking, the largest amphibious invasion in history, the operation was meticulously planned and involved an intricate combination of air, sea, and land assaults," Minister Barnett said.

"Despite the staggering odds and the immense risks, the mission was ultimately successful, marking the beginning of the end for Nazi occupation in Europe.

"Australia's main contribution to the D-Day Landings was in the air with between 2,000 and 2,500 Australian airmen serving the Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force.

"As we remember the bravery and sacrifices of those who participated in the Normandy landings, let us also reaffirm our commitment to the values they fought for.

"The 80th anniversary of D-Day is not just a moment to look back on history but a call to action to preserve and protect the freedoms and peace hard-won by those who came before us."
