Chinchilla QLD, 20 November 2024, REMONDIS Australia – Western Queensland will benefit from expanded waste and water management and industrial support services as REMONDIS acquires well-established Chinchilla-based operation, Specialty Services Queensland.
The acquisition, completed 1 November, provides opportunity for REMONDIS to expand and invest into the Western Downs and Maranoa Regional Council Areas. To respect Speciality Services Queensland's well-regarded and well-established operation, the business will be known as REMONDIS Speciality Services.
With former owner Declan Cummins and his team retained, it will be business as usual across REMONDIS Speciality Services' operations which include potable water cartage, vacuum tankering, vacuum excavation, dust suppression, drill rig support, industrial cleaning, regulated waste removal, equipment hire and location of underground utilities.
Speciality Services Queensland was established in 2007 to cater to the region's coal seam gas producers and has grown to employ 40 staff – all offered employment as part of the acquisition. New employment opportunities are likely as operations expand.
A new solid waste collection service is already underway, enabled by pre-emptive investments in fleet and equipment infrastructure. This has included the addition of several new front lift and hook lift vehicles to service a 350km radius of Chinchilla.
The current fleet of 65 vehicles will be renewed, with four new trucks already acquired. Scoping has commenced to see how additional recycling operations can be started to give second lives to items such as food waste, batteries, e-waste and paints.
REMONDIS Australia CEO Björn Becker said the acquisition was an important milestone. "Specialty Services Queensland has an impeccable track record and is the perfect fit for our Australian regional expansion program," Mr Becker said.
"Such acquisitions provide a base upon which we can take operations to new levels and offer more to rural communities and specialised industries.
"The acquisition is timely given that we recently secured a contract to service Shell QGC oil and gas activity in the region. Shell is committed to maximising diversion from landfill, and to local community engagement, and these priorities are shared by REMONDIS."
Specialty Services Queensland founder Declan Cummins said he was excited to work with REMONDIS to expand the capability of Speciality Services and bring new services to the region.
"REMONDIS has already added new solid waste collection and recycling capability to the business, and we are excited to bring their waste management know-how to Western Queensland," Mr Cummins said.
"Some large waste management companies shy away from investing in regional areas, but REMONDIS has seen potential and committed for the long term. With time, I expect that REMONDIS will assist communities such as Chinchilla and Miles access new recycling services that are currently only available in Brisbane," Mr Cummins said.
In recent years REMONDIS has expanded its footprint in regional Australia, establishing depots in Gladstone and Townsville, and at Weipa in the remote Cape York Peninsula.
