Regional Victorians will start to see roadwork crews out in force in the coming weeks as the next road maintenance blitz gets underway to give drivers safer, smoother and stronger country roads.
Crews across the state are gearing up to deliver thousands of maintenance jobs during the warmer months.
Last year, the regional roads blitz saw over 297,000 tonnes of asphalt laid and 145,000 potholes fixed. Another 1,500 kilometres of roads will be repaired, rebuilt and resurfaced this year, with 1,100 construction jobs to be created as part of this work.
This includes rebuilding more sections of major corridors such as the Princes Highway through Gippsland and the Hume Freeway in the north east, as well as rebuilds on other key roads including Stawell-Warracknabeal Road near Minyip, Echuca-Kyabram Road near Echuca, and the Glenelg Highway near Skipton and Coleraine.
Regional councils are also delivering 133 improvement projects on their municipal roads thanks to the $100 million Fixing Country Roads program, including rebuilding sections of local roads, sealing gravel roads and strengthening bridges.
During this maintenance period, reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place, and drivers are reminded to adhere to these changed conditions for the safety of roadworkers and the community.
