Common cardiovascular issues facing Western Australians will be the focus of an event attracting leading international and local researchers next week.
Topics will include trends in coronary heart disease in adults aged under 55, you are as old as your arteries and whether inflammation is the new cholesterol.
The Western Australian Cardiovascular Research Alliance (WACRA) Symposium will be held at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research next Monday 28 October. The Honourable Alanna Clohesy, MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier will open the symposium.
It will also provide an opportunity to launch the Alliance's website which showcases some of the world firsts that have been achieved by WA researchers.
The State's five universities as well as hospitals and institutes teamed up to form the alliance earlier this year, aiming to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death and promote research into heart, stroke and vascular disease to improve health outcomes for all Western Australians.
WACRA director Professor Livia Hool, from UWA's School of Human Sciences, said sessions would cover public health and epidemiology, pre-clinical discovery science, enhancing international collaborations and clinical health research.
WACRA comprises The University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, Notre Dame University, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Royal Perth Hospital Medical Research Foundation, Perron Institute, The Heart Foundation and Western Australian Health Translation Network. Professor Hool is also a Faculty Member of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute based in Sydney, which is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease.
