A commitment to supporting ADF reservists through flexible work practices has earnt St John of God Murdoch Hospital national recognition.
St John of God won the Private Sector - Large category of the coveted Defence National Employer Support Awards, at Gallipoli Barracks in Queensland.
Held annually, the awards formally recognise civilian employers' commitment over a sustained period, or in a special effort, to workplace practices that enable members to complete their ADF service commitments.
Army reservist Signaller Emma-Lee Jeavons said she nominated St John of God for its enduring support of her ADF service.
"As a nurse, I am required to do shift work. My employer understands my commitment to the reserves and ensures I have every Tuesday evening rostered off so I can attend parade night," Signaller Jeavons said.
"Additionally, when I was asked to deploy to Sydney on Operation Flood Assist with less than 24 hours' notice, my manager re-arranged my shifts for the three weeks I was away without any hesitation.
"She also kept in contact with me while I was away to check and see how things were going."
St John of God Nurse Unit Manager Irene Pienaar said it was an honour for the hospital to be recognised.
"The hospital supports and protects the employment of caregivers who undertake defence service. We value Emma's contribution to the Defence Force and to us as an employer," Ms Pienaar said.
"Emma brings a sense of pride, discipline and excellence in their work. It has been such a pleasure to see Emma grow in confidence and develop as a leader within our team, because of the training and skills that Emma has learnt as an ADF reservist."
Head of Joint Support Services Division Major General Douglas Laidlaw congratulated award winners and thanked all employers who support Defence reserve employees.
"Every day, employers throughout the nation support reservists through a range of flexible working arrangements and policies. The support provided is not only valued by the reservist, but more broadly the entire Australian Defence Force," Major General Laidlaw said.
