Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents to take precautions as a heatwave continues to grip the region leading into the long weekend.
Recent days have seen temperatures reach up to 39°C, with forecasts predicting highs of 34°C to 38°C today and throughout the weekend.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Drew Wickerson said that while the region is no stranger to high temperatures, it's important to stay vigilant as above-average heat is expected to continue over the coming days.
"We live in a region where summer and scorching days go hand in hand, but it's important to remember to stay hydrated and keep cool during these hotter periods," Cr Wickerson said.
"A heatwave occurs when the maximum and the minimum temperatures are unusually hot over a three-day period.
"This is a time for all of us to come together as a community. Take a moment this weekend to knock on your neighbour's door, especially if they're elderly or living alone.
"A quick chat and a check-in could make a world of difference to someone during these extreme conditions.
"Heatwaves don't just impact the elderly and vulnerable; they can affect anyone. Babies, young people, outdoor workers, and those with medical conditions such as asthma are particularly at risk and need to take extra care.
"Ensure your pets have access to plenty of shade and fresh water throughout the day."
Councillor Wickerson said there are simple yet effective steps everyone can take to avoid the dangers of extreme heat.
"For those feeling the heat, there are plenty of options to cool off," Cr Wickerson said.
"One of the great things about our region is that we've got plenty of air-conditioned spaces to escape to, like our local libraries, the Rockhampton Museum of Art, or even shopping centres.
"Hydration is key - make sure you're drinking plenty of water throughout the day and don't overdo it.
"If you're working outdoors, take regular breaks in the shade and listen to your body. Heatstroke and exhaustion can sneak up on you if you're not careful.
"If you're ever concerned about yourself or someone else, don't hesitate to seek medical attention."
Residents are advised to:
- Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
- Use air conditioning if available.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities or excessive exercise.
- Ensure your pets have access to water and shade.
- Check on vulnerable members of the community, including the elderly, young infants, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
