Mr Lines commenced as Ombudsman in 2014, after a six-year stint as WorkCover Ombudsman.
Prior to that, he has worked as a lawyer, including time in the Civil Litigation section of the Crown Solicitor's Office.
The State Government will work with Parliament's Statutory Officers Committee to undertake the process for appointing the next Ombudsman, in line with the requirements of the Ombudsman Act.
As put by Susan Close
As South Australia's sixth Ombudsman, Wayne Lines has played a vital role in holding governments and public servants to account.
He has always carried out his work with the utmost professionalism, and has considered matters in an impartial and even-handed manner.
It is a testament to his dedication that he will continue in the position until the end of the year, despite the tragic personal circumstances that have resulted in this decision.
On behalf of the State Government, I thank Wayne Lines for his service to South Australia and wish him and his family all the best.
