Restoration works on Mullumbimby's main water reservoir at Azalea Street bring improved safety and security of the town's water supply, extending the lifespan of the reservoir for approximately 20 years.

The work on the 45-year-old reservoir included cleaning and waterproofing.

Byron Shire Council's Capital Works Engineer for Utilities, Joshua Winter said the reservoir is an essential piece of infrastructure for Mullumbimby, which supplies 95% of the town with potable drinking water from Wilsons Creek via the Lavertys Gap Weir and Mullumbimby's Water Treatment Plant.

"This reservoir has been serving the Mullumbimby community since 1976 and time was taking its toll on the structure with some of the concrete degrading and water leakages," Mr Winter said.

"The entire surface of the reservoir has been sandblasted and waterproofed, which will ensure our valuable water supply remains clean, safe and secure for many years to come," he said.

Council funded the $528,000 restoration as part of its Utilities 30-year Capital Works Program.

There are two water reservoir sites servicing the Mullumbimby community, with the Azalea Street reservoir the main supply.
