Retail Data Signals Robust Business Confidence

Tasmanian Government

Monthly retail trade in Tasmania has again hit a record high, reaching $735.4 million for December 2024, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data released today.

Treasurer, Guy Barnett, said this continued growth will boost confidence across Tasmanian businesses.

"This latest data compounds the strong run of retail spending, pointing to a clear strength and resilience in Tasmania's economy – consumers are confident," the Treasurer said.

"When consumers are confident, our businesses are confident.

"When combined with the latest data that demonstrates Tasmania's business conditions are one of the best in the nation, this is positive news.

"On an annual basis, Tasmania's retail trade is a massive 65% per cent higher than it was for the 12 months prior to us coming to Government in 2014, and everyday Tasmanians are the winners.

"You can set your watch to it – Labor will see this as another opportunity to talk Tasmania down with trademark negativity.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is positive and producing results for all Tasmanians – something Labor go out of their way to deny.

"We will continue to back businesses and jobs, build confidence and champion Tasmania."
