Peak retail industry bodies, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and National Retail Association (NRA), have congratulated Queensland Premier David Crisafulli on his election victory highlighting the importance of working with the incoming government on key issues including retail crime and support for small business.
The NRA and ARA welcome the opportunity to work with the LNP on issues that are critical to the success of retailers who employ one in ten Queenslanders and contribute an enormous amount to our Queensland economy.
In the lead-up to the 2024 election, the LNP Government announced several initiatives to support small businesses with flow on benefits for retailers.
These include streamlined payments and procurements for Small Business, the creation of a new small business concierge service to tackle red tape and create a one-stop-shop for accessing government services, as well as additional support for innovation and regional start-ups.
ARA CEO Paul Zahra said that these plans would help strengthen small businesses during a challenging economic period.
"We have long been calling for support measures for small and medium sized businesses during the current cost of living crisis, which is why we welcome these initiatives from the newly elected LNP QLD government.
"By addressing cash-flow issues and administrative burdens, small businesses will be able to operate more efficiently," he said.
NRA Interim CEO Lindsay Carroll said the ARA and NRA continue to call for specific penalties in Queensland for criminals who assault retail workers, as is the case in New South Wales, South Australia and West Australia.
"No one should go to work fearing for their safety, but unfortunately this is the reality for many retail workers," Ms Carroll says.
"We recently welcomed the QLD Government's Respect at Work laws that will see stronger protections for people assaulted at work, and we look forward to continuing to work with the QLD LNP on this issue," she said.
The NRA and ARA thank outgoing Premier, Steven Miles for his contribution to Queensland business interests.
