Revitalised Bundilla Beach Area Partially Reopen

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is pleased to announce that Atkins Drive has re-opened to the public today, Thursday 27 February 2025, after being closed while the area is revitalised for Stage One of the Bundilla Beach Master Plan.

The north end of Bundilla Beach is now open to the public and features new paths and shade shelters, new public lighting and CCTV and more landscaping and greening.

A new dog park has been created for locals and visitors to enjoy and the Cyclone Tracy kinetic sculpture, Coriolis, is also accessible and available for public viewing.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was pleased to be able to open the north end of the Bundilla Beach area.

"These initial works are the first stage of achieving the longer-term vision for Bundilla Beach, which will see the entire area transformed to become a cool, green and natural space that supports leisure and recreation activities," Mr Vatskalis said.

"We are pleased to re-open Atkins Drive, from Conacher Street through to the Darwin Sailing Club, to the public.

"Key feedback received from the community during development of the Bundilla Beach Master Plan was the desire for a new dog park and I am pleased to report this is now open.

"The new dog park features two conveniently fenced sections to allow for off-leash exercise, with one space dedicated to small dogs and another space set aside for more active dogs to enjoy.

"Both areas feature seating, water fountains and easy access from Atkins Drive through to the lagoon and East Point Road.

"The southern end of the Bundilla Beach area remains a construction site while final works take place, however I look forward to opening the remaining area to the public in May 2025," he said.

Once compete, the south end of the Bundilla Beach area will see the car park area between the Darwin Ski Club and the boat ramp transformed into a green space; additional public lighting and CCTV installed and the installation of a skateable surface, a half-court basketball area, exercise node, toilets and BBQ tables and shelters.

The Bundilla Beach Master Plan was created after City of Darwin undertook extensive community and stakeholder engagement to capture a range of views about the future use of the area.

City of Darwin has invested $500,000, supported by a $3 million commitment from the Northern Territory Government, to develop the master plan and deliver the first stage of the revitalisation works.
