When Tracey Keating and her two daughters, 15-year old Summer and 12-year-old Chloe, lace up their shoes next month, it will be with their greatest supporter in mind.
Tracey's husband, and the girl's hero and father, Rhyan Keating, died from stroke in July 2023, he was 40-years-old.
"Rhyan had his first stroke in January 2021. It was a huge shock to our family, but we rallied around him and gave him the support he needed," Tracey said.
"Rhyan fought hard to become the best version of himself after his stroke. He lost 75 kilos and got into health and fitness. He would run two or three times a week and was passionate about educating others about reducing their own stroke risk."
On July 13, Rhyan was taken to hospital with vertigo symptoms. His family were told he'd suffered another stroke. They said their goodbyes just 10 days later.
The Keating family are bravely participating in Stride4Stroke next month. Like their dad, Rhyan's girls are passionate about sport and exercise.
"Rhyan was the most caring, loving and generous person. He was the life of the party and could brighten anyone's day, he touched so many people," Tracey said.
"Throughout November, we'll be walking and cycling to help raise funds and awareness for stroke research. No family should have to go through what we've been through. Rhyan is so sorely missed."
Stroke is sudden. It is a devastating disease that strikes the brain and can impact people of all ages.
Stride4Stroke is the Stroke Foundation's major annual fundraiser. Participants are encouraged to set an activity goal to increase their daily 'moving minutes'. They can choose any activity to complete within the month, from walking, running, swimming, cycling, an online exercise class or a goal in stroke rehabilitation.
Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Lisa Murphy said Rhyan's story highlights just how devastating stroke can be.
"I commend Tracey and the girls for helping us raise awareness about stroke. I hope their story inspires others to sign up for Stride4Stroke, and help us raise funds to prevent, treat and beat stroke.
"Every dollar raised makes a difference in how we can support them. It doesn't matter how far you stride - every effort counts in the battle against stroke."
Stride4Stroke begins on November 1 and runs the entire month. Sign up to the challenge.
