IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program Director, Keywan Riahi, has been re-appointed to the UN Secretary General's Group of Ten High-level Representatives for the 2024-2025 term.
© Silveri | IIASAThe United Nations 10-Member-Group of High-level Representatives of Civil Society, the Private Sector, and Scientific Community to support the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism, known as the 10-Member Group for short, is appointed by the UN Secretary-General and is mandated to work with the UN interagency task team on science technology and innovation (STI). Among their tasks are to prepare the annual STI Forum and to support the development and operationalization of the UN's online technology platform (2030 Connect), which serves as a gateway for information on existing initiatives, mechanisms, and programs. Riahi has been a member of this prestigious group since its inception in May 2021, adding his expertise and experience to help identify frontier technologies and innovations critical for science and evidence-based implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"In the pursuit of sustainable development and addressing the climate crisis, I am honored to have been asked to continue to serve on the 10-Member Group. Collaborative efforts are essential in identifying frontier technologies and innovations critical for evidence-based implementation of the SDGs. I hope to do my part to foster a stronger alliance between science, policy, and society, working towards a resilient and sustainable future for all," notes Riahi.
In addition to the UN 10-Member Group, Riahi is responsible for the coordination and co-design of flagship research activities across international scientific research communities, for example, as a member of the Earth Commission and as a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium. He is also Climate Advisor to the European Commission and the City of Vienna.
