Recent wild storm surges have undercut the stairs and beach shower at the Port Campbell foreshore, making them unsafe.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Kate Makin said the official foreshore reopening ceremony planned for Friday morning was postponed but the community thank you event on Friday night will go ahead.
"Without coastal erosion we wouldn't have the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge or any of the other spectacular coastal formations we love so much," Cr Makin said.
"It's frustrating that after a decade of planning and hard work this unbelievable storm hits just days before we were ready to reopen, but you can't stop Mother Nature.
"The town centre revitalisation works are all OK and continuing. It's just the beach access that needs repairs.
"We've booked the entertainment and ordered the food for Friday evening so the barbecue at the Museum & Playground precinct (42 Lord St) will still go ahead. Come along and enjoy some family fun."
The Mayor reminded people across the district that Port Campbell was still open for business.
"Don't forget the two Support Local competitions Council is running at the moment," she said.
"All this month if you come and shop in Port Campbell you could win a golden ticket with $50 towards your purchases.
