A motorcyclist has been charged with multiple traffic offences following a pursuit with police during an operation targeting riders driving dangerously on high-performance motorcycles in Sydney's south-west at the weekend.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command conducted Operation Furious on Friday (28 May 2021) and Saturday (29 May 2021) nights in Bankstown and Campsie Police Area Commands, targeting the suburbs of Greenacre, Punchbowl, Wiley Park and Bass Hill.
They were assisted by PolAir, officers from Campsie and Bankstown Police Area Commands, Bass Hill Region Enforcement Squad and the Dog Unit.
The operation was aimed at cracking down on motorcyclists hooning, speeding, and failing to stop for police; as well as other dangerous driving and traffic offences in those areas.
About 10.20pm on Saturday (29 May 2021), officers from Georges River Traffic and Highway Patrol were patrolling the Villawood area, when they attempted to stop a group of motorcycles on the Hume Highway, seen travelling at high speed.
The group accelerated away, and two bikes turned off on Henry Lawson Drive. The pair were monitored by PolAir and were allegedly seen travelling at high speed and disobeying red traffic control lights.
They again failed to stop for police on Newbridge Road before stopping outside a home on Bungulla Street, Sadlier, where the rider of a Yamaha MT07, a 22-year-old man, was arrested.
The second motorcyclist fled and was monitored by PolAir before it stopped outside a home on Rose Street, Liverpool. Police attended and spoke to the occupants, locating a Kawasaki motorcycle inside. The bike and helmet were seized for forensic examination as inquiries continue to identify the rider.
The Yamaha rider was taken to Liverpool Police Station and charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45 km/h, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, not comply P1 licence - no P plates, and use vehicle with number plate obscured/defaced.
The Ashcroft man was granted conditional bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday 14 July 2021.
Inspector Tina Davies of Traffic and Highway Patrol Command South West said motorists who treat our roads as racetracks and choose to ignore the road rules will continue to be targeted.
"We all have the right to feel safe when driving on our roads. Police will continue to target high performance and unregistered motorcycles through similar future operations," said Insp Davies.
During the operation, police issued 25 infringements for speeding offences - including six for speeds more than 45 km/h above the signposted limit.
Additionally, officers issued 40 infringements and laid 10 charges for other traffic related offences

Just before 1am on Saturday (29 May 2021), Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were on the M5 at Revesby for an unrelated vehicle stop, when a motorcycle was seen travelling past at an estimated speed in excess of 150 km/h. PolAir monitored the bike which stopped at a home on Gazelle Street, Glenfield. Police attended; however, were unable to locate the rider. The KTM motorcycle and helmet were seized as inquiries continue to identify the rider.
Similar operations are expected to continue in the future.
