Ring in New Year at one of Council's three community events

Make the most of New Year's Eve this Friday by heading down to one of Townsville City Council's three New Year's Eve sites to ring in the new year.

Riverway Stadium, Strand Park and Nelly Bay will be a hive of activity as locals and visitors get together to farewell 2021 and welcome a new year.

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the night started at 5pm for young families.

"We're starting our free screening of Dora and the Lost City of Gold at 5pm at Riverway Oval. There will be food trucks on site to make it easy to pick up a bite to eat ahead of the 8pm fireworks," she said.

"We will also have 8pm fireworks at Strand Park, so early birds can pick their location before getting an early night ahead of January 1.

"The best spots to see the midnight fireworks are Strand Park and Nelly Bay, which will both have incredible views of the sky show."

Cr Greaney said it was important to remember COVID-safe practices when out and about.

"The last thing we want is further cases of COVID in Townsville, so I'm urging all locals and visitors to keep their hygiene up to help slow the spread of COVID. This includes washing your hands for 20 seconds, using sanitiser, and coughing into your elbow instead of your hands," she said.

"As spectacular as fireworks are, they're not worth spreading illness for. If you're feeling sick, please stay home."
