Rio Residents Join Free G20, Leadership Workshops

The initiative took place in neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro and promotes democratic access to knowledge about sustainable development and local leadership. The topics covered in the training given to young people, adults and the elderly were: what the G20 is, its relevance, and the significance of the Summit of Heads of State that will take place in November.

Hosting the final G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro represents a unique opportunity to discuss global issues and develop cooperative strategies to tackle global challenges. Issues discussed by the member countries, such as climate change, economic inequality, poverty, and education and health, are directly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and with what the Soul Cria Impacto Program, which organizes the workshops, seeks to foster: promoting critical thinking and making communities more environmentally and socially aware and empowered.

The project aims to encourage people to contribute to a sustainable future, empowering residents and local leaders to develop public policies proposals for the challenges they face on a daily basis. After discussing the policies during the workshop, the Program team encourages the submission of the proposals on the G20 Social Participatory Platform.

For eight months, the collaborative and creative spaces that democratize access to the digital universe, named Naves do Conhecimento (Knowledge Ships), host workshops that directly reach communities in several regions of Rio de Janeiro. It is expected that more than a thousand people will be positively impacted in the following locations: Engenhão, Irajá, Madureira, Padre Miguel, Santa Cruz and Triagem.

Promoting topics such as: The Importance of Water Quality; Circular Economy; Carbon Credit; Ethnicity, Gender and Sexual Orientation; Community Leadership and Entrepreneurship, inspire citizens to have a new vision about society and the impact of the collective, also encouraging the pursuit of more effective actions by their leaders.

During the first workshop on the G20 given by Lucia Sousa (ESG Specialist and Executive Director of Soul Science), creator of the Soul Cria Impacto Program, and João Paulo (Founder of Educa Terra), and with communication and publicity support from Ana Perez (Social Responsibility of Karpowership), it was possible to apply dynamics in class that encouraged students to reflect on problems and solutions that exist in the regions they live.

As a result of this activity, several suggestions for public policies emerged, which will be submitted to the G20 Participatory Social, a digital platform that brings society closer to the G20 Summit. These include active urban safety measures; improvement in public transport; the creation of educational spaces to stimulate students with special needs, as well as investing in opportunities for autistic people in adulthood; development of reforestation projects in communities, community gardens and heritage and cultural education about the neighborhood, generating identity and awareness.

According to Raquel Leal, a state school geography teacher who participated in Nave Santa Cruz, "there is the problem of abandoning the historical heritage of Santa Cruz, a place that received many immigrants in the 1980s and rural works around the neighborhood. Being an achievable policy, it would be focused on heritage and cultural education combined with awareness-raising, generating identity and respect."

At the end of the training program in December, a detailed ESG Report will be presented, with indicators of social, environmental and governance impact, obtained during the workshops. This report will help local public and business leaders make decisions. This not only strengthens citizens' sense of belonging, but also ensures that the global issues discussed at the event have direct relevance to the region.

The next training theme is on Water Quality and will begin in September. Registration for the Naves do Conhecimento (Knowledge Ships) can be done free of charge using the following link: https://linktr.ee/soulcriaimpacto
