Rio Tinto, Alteo Seal Deal to Remediate Gardanne, Mange-Garri

GARDANNE, France -- Rio Tinto and Alteo have signed an agreement to support the future environmental rehabilitation and remediation of the Gardanne industrial complex, including the Mange-Garri tailings storage facilities.

Under the agreement, Rio Tinto will take over management and ownership of the Mange-Garri bauxite residue disposal area and responsibilities for its remediation and rehabilitation. Rio Tinto will now undertake preliminary environmental and technical studies, in coordination with the governmental bodies. Rio Tinto will be working closely with the regional authorities, as well as with other local stakeholders.

Regarding the Gardanne refinery, Rio Tinto and Alteo have secured, through this agreement, the financial and technical resources required for future remediation. Alteo will continue to operate and retain responsibility for the Gardanne refinery.

The Gardanne alumina refinery and the Mange-Garri industrial site have been part of the industrial history of the Pays d'Aix region for over 130 years, contributing to the industrial, employment and economic development of the region.
