Perth's city streets will shine with Christmas joy again this festive season as Rio Tinto confirms a new two-year partnership with the City of Perth for the annual Christmas Lights Trail.
Rio Tinto has committed $700,000 across two years as principal partner of the City of Perth's signature event, which will run for over 41 summer nights through the heart of the city.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said after sponsoring the event for the last two years it was an honour to welcome back Rio Tinto as the partner of the iconic Christmas event.
"No Christmas in Perth is complete without the joy of experiencing the City's Christmas Lights Trail. Thanks to Rio Tinto's support over the last two seasons, the event has evolved into a must-see spectacle that draws crowds to our city centre.
"Last year was the biggest year on record, with almost 20% more people enjoying the Lights Trail across the season compared with the previous year. I am excited to see this momentum continue and look forward to what's next for this marquee event over the next two years."
Rio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive Simon Trott said, "The Lights Trail embodies the spirit of the festive season, and we are proud to play a part in lighting up Perth's city streets with joy and wonder.
"This is our third year partnering with the City of Perth to bring the community together and create memorable experiences for West Australians during the festive season."
The City of Perth is also proud to welcome back Lotterywest as a Major Supporter of the event. Lotterywest has been fundamental in supporting the trail for the last six years. Over that time the event has won awards at the Australian Event Awards (2023 and 2020) and the Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards (2021 and 2022).
Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said it was wonderful to support the City of Perth's iconic Christmas Light trail for another year.
"The City of Perth's Christmas Light Trail has become a quintessential event on Western Australian's Christmas calendars," Mr Smith said. "Events like this boost community connection, attracting thousands of families and friends to come together and experience the wonder of our State in exciting ways," he said.
"The City of Light shines bright during the festive season and the Rio Tinto Christmas Light Trail draws people from near and far to experience the wonder of our City – which in turn means more trade for our local businesses. Plus, the support from Rio Tinto and Lotterywest means we can host these major events, with minimal impact on rate payers," Mr Zempilas said.
