Rise In Funding For Tasmania's Out Of Home Care System

Tasmanian Government

Additional funding of $120 million over four years will be provided in the Budget for the Tasmanian Government's Out of Home Care system.

The large injection of funding supports the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry for a well-functioning Out of Home Care system, which is vital to protect children from child sexual abuse.

Minister for Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said the Child Safety Service plays a critical role in protecting children's rights and providing them with care and support in a safe environment when they are unable to live safely at home.

"As a result of our Strong Families Safe Kids reforms more families are receiving the support they need to stay together and keep their children safe, without the need for statutory child safety intervention," Minister Jaensch said.

"This is a significant achievement.

"In the 2024-25 Budget we have provided $30 million per annum to assist in meeting the cost of out of home care to meet increased costs in relation to foster and kinship care, respite and salaried care and Special Care Packages."

The investment aligns with the Commission of Inquiry Recommendation 9.1.

$3.1 million over 4 years is provided for the Out of Home Care Reform Implementation Unit, which will lead and progress the out of home care reform agenda to elevate and accelerate the delivery of a whole of government approach to implementation of relevant recommendations

The implementation of all 191 recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry is a core commitment of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
