The Swan and Canning rivers will benefit from almost $1.8 million in new funding for foreshore restoration projects as part of the McGowan Government's commitment to improve the health of the Swan Canning Riverpark.
The grants focus on projects that protect or enhance environmental, recreational and cultural values of the Swan and Canning Rivers.
Riverbank funding worth a combined $1,796,577 will go to 15 local foreshore land managers, and remaining funds will be negotiated with local government partners to ensure the protection of priority sites river-wide, in the latest round of grants.
The City of Belmont will receive more than $240,000 to upgrade and restore the Esplanade Foreshore. This will include the construction of a raised walkway, fishing platform and recreation areas.
The Shire of Mundaring, in partnership with the Helena River Primary School, will benefit from more than $43,000 to spend on foreshore rehabilitation along 300 metres of the Helena River.
Since the start of the program in 2002, more than $25.8 million has been contributed to 338 Riverbank projects around the Swan and Canning rivers.
As stated by Acting Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
"Over the years, the Riverbank Program has been essential in projects ranging from Bells Rapids to South Perth Foreshore.
"These initiatives have helped revitalise waterways through actions such as weed eradication and creating new habitats.
"Congratulations to this round's successful recipients. I look forward to seeing the difference these projects will make in our communities."
