Road Safety Commission Teams Up With SportWest

  • New road safety partnership between Road Safety Commission and SportWest
  • $1.9 million to be invested over four years
  • Aims to engage and educate members of community sporting clubs on road safety

Sport is considered a universal language and now its powerful attributes are being directed towards boosting road safety in Western Australia.

Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby welcomed a new $1.9 million partnership between the Road Safety Commission and SportWest to positively influence road safety culture and behaviours through sport.

The four-year multimillion-dollar partnership will integrate education, behaviour change initiatives and community support to build a lasting impact on road safety culture across the WA sporting community and broader population.

The partnership will see several initiatives rolled out between now and June 2028, including a Road Safety Club Rewards Program, a Captain's Club and a Road Safety Ambassador Program. SportWest will also introduce a new category to the WA Sport Awards recognising the Road Safety Advocate of the Year to highlight individuals or clubs that excel in promoting road safety.

SportWest is the peak body for sport in Western Australia with more than 5,500 sporting clubs and 700,000 participants in organised sport across the State. SportWest is ideally positioned to engage and educate a wide audience on how to adopt safer behaviours on our roads.

As stated by Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby:

"Sport has the ability to influence people on so many different levels and now we're using this universal language to boost road safety behaviour in Western Australia.

"This new multimillion-dollar partnership will focus on using sport to change the culture and behaviour of motorists to save lives.

"We will be launching new road safety initiatives and programs through sporting clubs across WA, and targeting young men who continue to be over-represented in road safety statistics.

"This new partnership will be a new platform in which to engage young men and use sport as the common language to change road behaviour and save more lives."
