Road Safety Operation In Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police have arrested four people following a road safety operation in Alice Springs over the weekend.

On Saturday 10 August 2024, the Southern Traffic Operations conducted a three-hour Random Breath Testing (RBT) station on Stuart Highway, coming through the Gap into Alice Springs.

During the RBT more than 650 drivers were tested with four positive alcohol readings returned, three of which were recorded under the legal limit following secondary testing.

Members also conducted random drug testing, where two positive results were returned.

The operation outcomes consisted of:

  • 10 traffic infringement notices for unregistered/ uninsured vehicles or unrestrained passengers.
  • A 37-year-old female was arrested for driving disqualified and driving under the influence of drugs.
  • A 41-year-old male was arrested for driving disqualified, three unrestrained children, overloading of a vehicle and other unrelated offences. A 46-year-old female passenger, the owner of the vehicle, was issued a notice to appear for permitting an unlicensed driver in an unregistered and uninsured car.
  • A 50-year-old female for medium range driving under the influence of alcohol and other unrelated offences.
  • A 50-year-old male for domestic violence related offences.
  • 1 defect notice issues.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said, "We do not accept these poor behaviours. These behaviours are proven to have serious consequences on our roads, so we must be at our best when driving."

"The Northern Territory Police will continue to work at removing offending drivers from our roads to keep people safe. If you choose to do the wrong thing it is only a matter of time before you are caught."
