The Rockhampton BMX Club is ready to rumble, with hundreds of competitors and spectators expected to attend an action-packed weekend of racing at the annual "Rocky Rumble" event.
Deputy Mayor and Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the Rockhampton BMX Club received $4,150 towards the Rocky Rumble event through Council's Community Assistance Program (CAP).
"Council is proud to partner with local clubs such as the Rockhampton BMX Club and see fantastic sporting events like this being held in our region," Cr Wickerson said.
"For over a decade, Rocky Rumble has been a staple event within the BMX community, drawing bike motocross enthusiasts from across Queensland - this year's event is expected to attract over 200 competitors.
"Council has continued to support this regional competition throughout the past 14 years, contributing over $26,000 in CAP funding, helping ensure its future growth and success."
CAP funding is allocated to local and regional events, alongside initiatives for development, environmental, and sustainability projects.
"The Rockhampton BMX Club was just one of 30 local community events and programs to receive a share in more than $109,000 in round two of 2023/24 CAP funding," Cr Wickerson said.
"Other local events and initiatives to benefit from the recent funding round include the Ian Weigh Toyota Rockhampton Pro-Am, Australian Barrel Horse Cap Coast Classic, Ridgelands State School Centenary, Extreme Trampoline CQ Winter Classic, and Colts Rugby Union Cultural Day."
Rockhampton BMX Club President Nicole McBryde said the CAP funding was invaluable to the club, ensuring its biggest event of the year was able to take place.
"We expect to welcome upwards of 800 people through the gates over the weekend," Ms McBryde said.
"This is a multi-generational sport so we will see kids and their grandparents, plus everyone else in between compete.
"This is the biggest event on our calendar, and we're excited to welcome competitors from all over Queensland, from Redlands to Townsville, the Central Highlands and Moranbah.
"As rider safety is our top priority, we like to source the best medics available for the weekend and Council's CAP funding has gone towards that.
"Rocky Rumble is open to the whole community and we encourage friends and family to come watch the action with free entry throughout the weekend."
