Are you ready for a street transformation? Rockhampton Regional Council is ready to team up with residents across the Region with the launch of a new street tree planting initiative to increase urban greening.
To see more trees planted in residential streets, Council is calling on residents to consider if their footpath could benefit from a new tree and submit a request before 5 May, 2024.?
The initiative is part of Council's Urban Greening Policy which aims to increase urban plantings for a cooler and greener Region.
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it's a great opportunity for residents to see their footpaths transformed and potentially an entire street.
"Council has been planting street trees for free at the request of homeowners for a long time, and this is something we want to encourage more of, which has led us to develop this pilot program," Cr Rutherford said.
"Our initial aim is to plant more than 150 trees during the cooler months with priority given to areas with low urban canopy.
"Our parks team will plant selected species across the region to ensure consistency and suitability and will continue to then monitor the growth and health of the tree months ahead.?
"The types of trees we have included in the program range in size from 6 to 12 metres tall once fully established and have lush green canopies or are a beautiful flowering tree in summertime and are either native to Queensland or recorded as naturalised in South-East Queensland.
"We will also provide residents with information about the tree species that was chosen for their footpath, so they too can help support the tree's long-term health.
"I am really looking forward to seeing residents participate in this program, helping transform streets and bring more shade and greenery across our Region."
To request a tree, residents can complete the online Street Tree Request Form on Council's website or submit a hard copy to one of Council's Customer Service centres before Sunday, 5 May 2024.
