Rockhampton local leads emergency care at Mater

Rockhampton doctor Muhammad Umer Ihsan has been appointed Clinical Director of Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton's Emergency Care Centre.

A trained emergency physician with more than 17 years of clinical and academic experience, Dr Ihsan brings expertise in simulation training to empower healthcare professionals in the region to deliver world-class critical care.

Since settling in Rockhampton with his family in 2012, Dr Ihsan has worked as a Senior Staff Specialist and Ultrasound Fellowship Program Supervisor at Rockhampton Hospital.

"My understanding of modern healthcare management systems allows me to help teams optimise decision making while maintaining their focus on patient-centred care," Dr Ihsan said.

Since opening its doors in September 2018, the ECC at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton has seen a significant increase in the number of patients with more people seeking greater accessibility to emergency care with minimal waiting times.

Patient numbers have climbed steadily since it opened with a 49 per cent rise in the number of patients presenting between January – April in 2019 compared with the same period this year.

Dr Ihsan said delivering consistent, high quality emergency care was essential for the Rockhampton community.

"Witnessing the critical role emergency services play in ensuring the safety and health of Rockhampton's residents has deepened my dedication to developing first-class emergency departments," Dr Ihsan said.

As the Director of Emergency Medical Training at Rockhampton Hospital Dr Ihsan's background in academic emergency medicine and passion for teaching has seen him develop resources for training and simulation.

"By providing accessible and effective training materials, I aim to help healthcare professionals in Rockhampton and beyond gain the skills and knowledge needed to deliver top-notch emergency care," he said.
